Wilderness hiking in New Zealand | Siberia Valley and Southern Alps

Siberia Valley is a diverse set of ecosystems where glacial peaks melt into surging waterfalls which flow through to ocean-bound rivulets. The Siberia Experience involved us flying from Makarora over the Southern Alps and into Siberia Valley. Here we did a full day hike to Lake Crucible and then stayed in one of New Zealand's most isolated mountain huts overnight. Think the lodge in 'The Shining', but basic. We spent the next day trekking to a river over the mountains where a jet boat picked us up and we hooned back to town. We booked through http:/www.siberiaexperience.co.nz but extended our trip to make it cover two days and to allow us to cover more ground on foot. The extras were all self-guided.
