Wild Camping Tent Review - Nigor WickiUp 3 / Shangri-La 3 - Is It The Ideal 4 Season Tent?
Mountain | reviews | videos | photos
After searching for months on the internet looking for the holy grail of tents I hope that at last I may have found one that ticks all the boxes. With several features that allow for different conditions and styles of camping it may be my new go to tent from now on and am looking forward to trying it out soon.! Spent ages looking at Terra Nova’s, Hilleberg’s, Tarptents, Trekkertent, Duomid, Trailstar and MSR to name a few but they all had one issue or another such as poor wind stability, condensation, weight, waiting lists, etc. So at last I think that this may be the ideal 4 seasons does it all tent for various scenarios? It is a fairly Lightweight tent system, and could be fairly ultralight if just using the flysheet and your walking poles. This offers a good design with a great space-to-weight ratio. The pyramid style design with one DAC center pole cuts weight in a big way and is supposed to offer extreme stability in bad weather conditions. Purchased the flysheet and pole setup and initially the single 'Luxe HexpeakV4' inner nest to try out the tent. plan on getting a full mesh inner from China and the proper Nigor double inner. Tent could allow for the following combinations if you do a bit of searching and sourcing. 1. Flysheet only. 2. Flysheet and single person full inner mesh 3. Fly and single person solid inner 4. Flysheet and double solid inner 5. Possible camping stove addition Features I really like. 1. Weather and wind shedding capability. 2. Multiple pole options 3. Multiple tie out points for guy lines. 4. Can use my Pacer or any other trekking poles to lower weight. 5. Ample space for kit and getting changed. 6. Easiest tent I have ever had for packing away 7. Takes up very little space in rucksack. However as with all tents it may look good on first pitch and the principles seem sound but the real proof will be in the using. So will keep this until the end of the year and in to the winter to see how it really performs. Please check out links below for further information on this tent and its setup combinations as well as practical films from use in winter. In particular using an internal stove. This idea looks a possibility but would recommend doing further research on the safety aspects before taking this concept further. https://markswalkingblog.wordpress.com/2015/09/15/nigor-wickiup-3-sul-tent-options/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00-Um-yvTR8 http://tgomagazine.co.uk/gear-editors-column/chriss-column-nigor-wickiup-3-sul-pyramid-tent/ http://www.christownsendoutdoors.com/2016/04/nigor-wickiup-3-reviewed-for-great.html http://www.backpackinglight.co.uk/shelters-1/WF136.html http://www.backpackinglight.co.uk/shelters-1/WB117.html _________________________________________________________________ Despite their modest height, walking and climbing in the Scottish mountains may be made treacherous by their latitude and exposure to Atlantic weather systems. Even in summer, conditions can be atrocious; thick fog, strong winds, driving rain and freezing summit temperatures are commonplace. The content shown in my films are just my own opinions, thoughts and as a way to record my trips. Walking and hiking in the Scottish mountains & hills can be dangerous and is done entirely at your own risk. Note: You are responsible for your own safety. Are you fit enough to complete your chosen walk in the available time? Ensure you have the correct clothing for the changeable Scottish weather. Know where you are going on the walk and follow the route on your map. At the very least carry a map & compass, survival bag, torch, whistle and small first aid kit. Ensure you have enough food plus emergency rations. Cold temperatures will reduce the life of your batteries. In severe winter conditions you must carry an ice axe. You are also recommended to carry crampons. Learn and know how to use your equipment. _________________________________________________________________ Outdoors, Bushcraft, Bush craft, Woodcraft, Wood craft, Survival, Historical lore, Primitive skills, Archery, Fishing, Navigation, Knives, Axes, Fire, Water, Shelter, Search and Rescue, Wildcamp, Wild camp, Nature, Edc. In case your interested, golite have been purchased, and are now called My Trail Company. They're also now selling the Shangri la, it's now called The Pyramid 3. Its the Shangri la with the new name on it, literally. Currently on offer for $239. Plan on getting it very soon myself. Only downside is it's only available in Yellow, but a plus side is the only structural change, or so I've heard, is they're using a more up to date stronger yet lighter material.
Kindest regards

Looks like a great shelter but I went for the budget version the Luxe Sil Hexpeak V4a. I love this teepee design. It's been bombproof so far and I love the extra space inside. Great vid and review. Thanks for posting

Have you seen the MyTrailCo Pyramid 3 shelter? I think its a brand new company from the former owner of GoLite where they just sell a few of the more popular Golite designs. Their shelter is only $299 USD and it comes with a full inner nest. Just something your viewers might want to look at if they like this style particularly if in the US.

A lot bigger than the Duo Mid inside Ray, looks a better tent altogether. Like you say its a proven design. How did you find the inner nest? Whats it like in the wind? Great review mate :) Tim

Very nice review and I agree about the 4 season use and especially the stormproofness...
I recently bought the Tentipi Olivin Combi which I believe to be the toughest tent ever produced for 2 persons in all seasons ... Made by the Sami people in the north of Sweden and with the best materials available... Only problem ... It weighs 3.5 kilos with the full setup but I believe it to survive anything you throw at it ...
I will return with a review shortly when I return from Lappland in mid September ...

thanks ray. I've enjoyed watching your videos, wishing I was back in Scotland again, it feels along way from south coast England :-( I've also recently got a wickiup and wondered how you find the luxe inner? as I'm thinking about one too.

Nice tent Ray - I have a canvas Polish army one and love it, but it's not very good for hiking.
Also nice to see you using the Removu - the sound quality was excellent.

Ive found the terra nova southern cross 1 to be the best 4 season tent, slight problem with condensation though

Hi Ray great demo , i've got the luxe mini-peak 2 which i much prefer to a hammock when camping in the woods . I wouldn't use mine for the hills TBH but i'll be very interested to see how you get on. Nelson loves his teepee tents and i've been in a few , their certainly a nice space to be in. Yeah i looked at the Duo mid. I agree about the wind on the summits so i just got myself another tent , sold the akto. I hope this works out for you atb Eddie.
p.s. hope you get out soon its going to be august before i'm out , could sneak out this monday but i've done 19days/nights in a row so may rest. -
Hi Ray, Did you consider the Luxe Hexpeak V4 and if so can you comment over why to pick the Wickiup over the Hexpeak?
-
great review ray that would be cool with a wood stove as you said i have been thinking of doing that kind of camping for about 3 years now not got the tent or stove to do it this winter could be the year atb stuart

Hi Ray, it'll be good to see how you get on with this in the coming months as I'm having to keep 3 tents for different situations. I used to have the Go-Lite Hex 3 which was pretty similar. Liked it but at that time I could only get a full diameter inner which made cooking a bind and the inner used to get wet opening the door. That half inner nest looks way better. Anyway will be great to see how it goes if the great Scottish Summer would return soon..atb Andy

Excellent review Ray.
The tent looks great and very similar to my Luxe Hex peak that I used on the West highland way earlier this year although it does look bigger..
The mods sound very interesting. The opportunity to fit a wood stove is a big plus.
Looking Forward to seeing you ou using this in future videos.

Very informative, and a good review. It will be interesting to follow your progress out on the hill with it. Must say it caught my eye in this months TGO gear supplement. Hope you have found the tent your happy with. ATB R&D ...Keep us updated on the condensation issues :)

Nothing will tick all the boxes unfortunately, always good to have a couple of options... but a good review nonetheless :)

Hi,i used to have a shangri-la until the back wheel of my mtb ate it. As a lightweight easy pitch it really was hard to beat and as your tent has several improvements i'm tempted myself , so i'll watch your future vids to see how you get on with it. My only criticism is it was a fairly cold tent in winter , when i knew it was going to be into the extreme side of cold i always used my original Quasar and still do when camping with the wife , but as a one man i could take the wheels off my bike and fit the whole lot inside. There are also some much cheaper options for the inner by other manufacturers if the overall cost is a bit too steep. Cracking tent. Helpful video. - ATB - Austin

Hi Mate, I am glad you have found the perfect tent for you. How long did it take you. It took me about 18 months to find what I consider to be my perfect tent that ticked all the boxes. I have used it once on the outskirts of the Brecon Beacons South Wales, where I had all four seasons in 24 hours, warm sunshine, heavy rain, heavy hailstones, it was minus in the wee hours, it snowed and I woke up the follow morning to a snowy icey ground. I had no condensation on me, I was chuffed. Getting back to your choice, it doesn't matter what tent you think is a winner as long as it ticks all the boxes you need it too. Happy Wild Camping.
