Been to Austria recently and I do agree with so many of what you said, lived in Germany for a long time and was really shocked how different and nicer Austria is. Salzburg is by far the best city, so lovely, with nicest locals, just the right size and not massively overcrowded with tourists. I spent a week there and would happily go back. Also so many beautiful countryside around, Tirol is gorgeous. Vienna is just big, expensive and crowded. Service tho, is so so sooooooo bad, OMG I dont think I have ever experience such a bad service, def worst in Vienna, not even rude but in 90% of cases they didnt even wait for me to finish my order, I started ordering drinks and a starter and was in the middle of a next sentence when a waiter just walked away, like what the hell!! I tried to do it quicker and made sure I know everything I want and just order it .... still, they just kept walking away middle of the order.
The worst thing you did not mention is smoking, I was shocked they still allow smoking in restaurants and how much they smoke in general. Sometimes it was very difficult to find a non-smoking restaurant for dinner. So if you are asthmatic you will struggle. -
the funniest thing is when you know the place where this guy was standing all the time bc you live in salzburg :)

For one, Austrian beer is better than german beer. Germany is only really good with wheat-beer, but the other ones are not that good. Austria and Czech Republic are top of the field here. Just avoid Brau-Union brands.. the smaller breweries are far better.
When it comes to waiters, you gotta understand that Austria is a tourist country. Depending on the region, either summer or winter is main-season and people there have a stressful job for a couple of months, where they just focus on working rather than making friends. In the mind-set of a waiter here, having small-talk with you for 5 minutes prevents him from getting work done for 5 minutes, reducing the service for all other customers. Working in a restaurant myself I can tell you that it's 8 hours of non-stop work. Since Austria has a good social system, costs for workers are high so people have to do more. When a US restaurant can afford to hire more waiters, in Austria every single waiter does more work.
It is wrong though, that 10% tip is required. Tip is optional but customary. Speaking from practice, 3-5% are more realistic to expect than 10. You only gotta know that waiters earn less because it is expected that they will get a tip, so if no one gives a tip, they'll hardly make enough to survive. -
the most things are wrong i know it because i am from austria

#1 Its not hate. Its more a mocking relationship. But yeah, way to piss off an Austrian, is to tell him, that he is German.
#3 Austria has a great income on tourism. Figures it would be professional.
Note: Most Austrian don't even know "The Sound of Music", except for those, who work in tourism
#4 What kind of shock, do you think, was it for Austrians in 1918, to suddenly fall from a big powerful empire to a small meaningless spot on the map? Ever heard of "Resttrauma"
#6 Yeah, Austrians in general are kind of proud to be grumpy.
#7 That coming from an American is kind of weird. I mostly considered Austrians way less nationalistic than other countries. Ranting about Austria is actually kind of a sport here. Maybe you only saw traditional associations and tourist guides, that gave you this impression.
#9 DID YOU JUST CALL AUSTRIAN BEER GROSS ?!!!!! DUDE!!! AUSTRIAN BEER HAS MORE VARIETY AND IS VERY WELL ABLE TO COMPETE WITH GERMAN AND CZECH BEER! -
What you say about our beer isn't true at all. We have a lot of good beer too.
It just has more alcohol and tastes more like beer and less like water (what American beer does). Try "Gösser", "Wieselburger", "Stiegl" Ottakringer! -
The beer hate annoyed me. Just go to the upper Austrian countryside, there is a brewery in every village (kinda). Everyone can find a beer they like in Austria. And about German beer: everything that's brewed north of Munich is gross to me.

it's kinda weird when an american thinks its funny how we austrians love ourselves ;)
-
Sorry Mate but Austrian Beer is, compared to other beers in the world, excellent!
-
as an austrian i can say DO drink beer - Stiegl is better than OK?!
just sayn' -
The Beer is mit good? Oh boy you better run faster than the peasants xD
-
if you dont like the austrian beer you defenitely drunk the wrong beer :D or it's because americans are not used to real beer :P
another helpful thing is to not drink a Stiegl (Stiegl is shameful for austrian brewery^^) if you are in Salzburg try Augustiner(or as we call it "Müllna Bräu") -
stfup american ur beer is more shit then ours
-
Your kids are incredibly cute. Nice family!
-
Do they feel more of a connection with Hungary than Germany?
-
So Austrians are "nationalistic" and "really love themselves"? Compared to the USA we Austrians have a LONG way to go to come even close to America's "we are the greatest" attitude and their worship of the national flag. We have a great history, we have a beautiful gem of a country, and are proud of it - what's wrong with that? Does that make us "nationalistic"
-
The differences between Austria and Germany can be compared to the relationship between Canada and the US.
-
The only thing that would make me love my counter even more would be if only my fellow Austrian's would finally give up that disgusting habbit of smoking
