Dauphin, France Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department This gîte is named LE JARDIN. It has at least six terraced gardens. copyright 2013 Lisa B. It is not very far from the Mediterranean sea and is in some Alps. The Lubéron is part of the picture -- a famous mountain range. A gîte is a furnished accommodation you can rent where you can cook, wash, etc. I like them better than hotels, often. They can be huge money savers and it is often more "with personality," more homey. In this case, it was fairly glamorous. What a house! Many of the villages here were built on peaks for defensive, strategic reasons. Sometimes, when there was less aggression, people abandoned the fortified, high villages and sought easier locations on lower ground -- there are lots of these around here, known as VERIERES, I think is the word. They can be nearly inaccessible and possibly dangerous to visit, however, if you want to climb like a goat up to any of them. This house was rented for a week in September, 2013 and cost about 290 euros. A deposit was due and my spouse and I cleaned it before vacating, in order to save a cleaning fee. I think the bedsheets, we rented from the owners, but we brought our own towels from Paris. The house sleeps six, has two bathrooms and is very well-equipped. The house was constructed around some sort of old fortification tower. This entrance to the house and one of its six or seven terraced garden levels involves walking down or up a very steep little cobblestoned alley/street from or going into the village and then knowing to go through this tunnel to get up to one of the gardens and an entrance to the house. Really, if no one is at home, you'd have to go back out and get down to the lower level to get to the official front door at the lowest level. It is not even on a street, more of an unpaved path. That's where the letter box is, for example. (Or where guests would likely be received.) Dauphin is very quiet and safe but there are few businesses there. We used our rented car to drive to Manes or Forcalquier for shopping. Can you imagine inviting a date to this house for the first time at night via this tunnel? They'd think they were going to be "caught in the axe!" You'd at least need a flashlight.

Miles to go before I sleep ... :)

"I stand convinced"...Also, I believe this way while seated! Which is more than what my Henri can do...after one of our "sessions"! Au revoir dear one, I shall now take my leave, ---to that place which is A lazy stream of dreams, Where vain desires forget themselves In the loveliness of sleep. Moon River Enchanted white ribbon Twined in the hair of night, Where nothing is but sleep.

I stand convinced that NO ONE has a "happy childhood." They may think so, but have only been successful in burying the demons & are fooling themselves. What else could explain the wide-spread insanity of the French male population...and their constant need for a good bare-ass, belt-spanking. And usually with those wide Prussian ones! There's something there that modesty prevents me from investigating. That and the affects of women-rasslin' on men. [Blush!]

Yeah, I think that was a dove you heard. I don't like them, actually, but they are turtle doves and migrate away for winter. There are tons of rapacious birds around here, I love seeing them. I only saw an owl once in daylight here in France, it moved because we disturbed it. At night, sometimes they scream! I love that but it used to drive my mother in law crazy. She liked those hooting turtle doves. Well, they are nice birds, anyway.

That's pretty far! Yeah, my parents didn't start locking their house in Ohio until they kicked me out. When I'd go back for arranged visits, they'd forget and lock me out! I just went in through a basement window. It was annoying but they had passed out drunk and couldn't hear me calling and knocking, ringing the bells. Alcoholic screwups.

I think our chef the last night was down in the kitchen getting sauced with a girlfriend. I literally had to call down to her to come up and get paid! I then saw the girlfriend stagger off, ha ha! I could have poured myself a drink or stolen stuff there, but France runs on a honor system generally and usually people respect that in most places. Yeah, if you get stoned in these places, you will have an accident!

There were some nice cats there, seemed very content. Yeah, there is little light pollution out there -- nothing is lit at night. So there is an observatory nearby and stargazing here is spectacular. Everyone thinks to carry some kind of flashlight. The house keeps one right by the front door. When we went out our last night there for a nice restaurant meal, I hadn't thought to leave the front door light on and it was hard getting back there! I got scratched by thistles, it was funny!

Wow,....besides having an ordinary, more used entrance to this home, to have that NEATO tunnel entrance is the MOST! I guess if ya live up here, you'd be better off laying of the booze, can ya imagine some drunk walkin' up, without no protective railing,.....hmm,...i'm thinkin' if you aren't part mountain goat mon ami!!! hehehehe...just kiddin' beautiful!! ;)

As a wee child, the house we lived in (Chicago) had a tunnel entrance...as did many of the neighboring ones. The main one, which had branches going hither& dither, was about 200 M. in length, its entrance/exit was in an old alleyway & secured by a locked gate. GREAT fun for kids. But sometimes an errant husband would have to sleep-it-off down there, when he was unable to find his way home...or when his basement door had been secured by his angry wife.

I sooo could live there! Growing and planting flowers, veggies & herbs. ~ Love the Owl Hooting towards the end! ~~ Hope your Day is going well Lisa. I'm off today & need to mow but alas, enjoying the view here in Paris, think I will stay in even though it's severe clear out there. Crystal blue skies without a wisp of a cloud! ~~~ Cheers Dear! Yes, I'm glad the resolution on this clip is good enough to show the skill of the workers.

Fantastic nooks and crannies. The stone work in the terrace walls is astounding.
