Dauphin, France Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department This gîte is named LE JARDIN. It has at least six terraced gardens. copyright 2013 Lisa B. It is not very far from the Mediterranean sea and is in some Alps. The Lubéron is part of the picture -- a famous mountain range. A gîte is a furnished accommodation you can rent where you can cook, wash, etc. I like them better than hotels, often. They can be huge money savers and it is often more "with personality," more homey. In this case, it was fairly glamorous. What a house! Many of the villages here were built on peaks for defensive, strategic reasons. Sometimes, when there was less aggression, people abandoned the fortified, high villages and sought easier locations on lower ground -- there are lots of these around here, known as VERIERES, I think is the word. They can be nearly inaccessible and possibly dangerous to visit, however, if you want to climb like a goat up to any of them. This house was rented for a week in September, 2013 and cost about 290 euros. A deposit was due and my spouse and I cleaned it before vacating, in order to save a cleaning fee. I think the bedsheets, we rented from the owners, but we brought our own towels from Paris. The house sleeps six, has two bathrooms and is very well-equipped. The house was constructed around some sort of old fortification tower. This entrance to the house and one of its six or seven terraced garden levels involves walking down or up a very steep little cobblestoned alley/street from or going into the village and then knowing to go through this tunnel to get up to one of the gardens and an entrance to the house. Really, if no one is at home, you'd have to go back out and get down to the lower level to get to the official front door at the lowest level. It is not even on a street, more of an unpaved path. That's where the letter box is, for example. (Or where guests would likely be received.) Dauphin is very quiet and safe but there are few businesses there. We used our rented car to drive to Manes or Forcalquier for shopping. Can you imagine inviting a date to this house for the first time at night via this tunnel? They'd think they were going to be "caught in the axe!" You'd at least need a flashlight.
