Roughly July-August 2002 my hiking partner, Dan, a.k.a. Goatlegs, and I jumped on a $15 military flight from BWI to Aviano, Italy, to begin an epic trek through the Austrian Alps. We settled into the small town of Sacile and eventually made our way north to begin a hut-to-hut traverse of the mountainous region near Innsbruck. I found a book on hut hiking and felt compelled to do it. A year of planning was put in and it turned out to be one of the greatest trips I've ever done. As usual during this time in my life I was crazy into movie making with transitions, filters and other odds and ends. It is cheesy but again I wouldn't change a thing. After the trek we circled back down to Italy and hit up Venice. Pretty sure we both got on each others nerves but Goatlegs remains one of my major hiking mentors, devoted friends and just an all-around great person who just belongs outside on the trail because he makes being outside better. Little did I know that my life would completely change after this trip.
