Tiny refuge in the Alps built in memory of young Italian mountaineer inhabitat.com/tiny-refuge-in-the-alps-built-in-memory-of-young-italian-mountaineer/ ~ When the late Italian mountaineer Luca Vuerich died climbing an iced waterfall at only 34 years of age, his family paid him tribute with a new refuge for other mountain-lovers. Perched atop the Foronon del Buinz Mountain in the Julian Alps, this prefab, chapel-like shelter stands at an elevation of 8,300 feet. Designed by architect Giovanni Pesamosca, the hut was completed in a single day by builders, mountain rescue volunteers and Luca´s friends. Luca Vuerich was a mountain guide and well know climber who sadly died some years ago at the age of 34. He was caught by an avalanche while climbing an iced waterfall in the mountains near Tarvisio. Nowadays, the ‘Camping Luca Vuerich’ stands in isolation in the crest of the Foronon Buinz Mountain, honoring his life.
