The Zillertal high road belongs to the most beautiful alpine panorama roads in Austria and is situated in the foothills of the Alps of Tux in the southern part of the Zillertal. We start this hard and challenging tour in Hippach at 2034 ft above sea level. The upcoming climb to the highest point of the Zillertal high road, the Melchboden (6611 ft), is not the steepest of the altogether 5 possible climbs, however, it is the longest with the greatest difference in altitude. Already in the village it gets tough. The road begins to ascend beyond the 10% mark and we soon gather altitude along the serpentines. Especially harsh gradients have to be mastered in Gschwendt and after the guesthouse Roswitha. A beautiful view into the green and fertile valley and of the snow and ice covered Zillertal Alps will compensate us for this very exhausting climb. Having arrived at the Melchboden below the Arbiskopf at 6627 ft above sea level, after overcoming 4659 ft, we continue in a winding course alongside the western hill side of the Zillertal. The stretch of this scenic road runs for the most part above the tree line at a height between 5577 and 6890 ft. This tour ends after approx. 23.6 miles including a beautiful and terrific descent in Ried (1870 ft) in the Zillertal.
