The Right Companion: Bernese Mountain Dog
Mountain | reviews | videos | photos
The Bernese Mountain Dog, called in German the Berner Sennenhund, is a large-sized breed of dog, one of the four breeds of Sennenhund-type dogs from the Swiss Alps. Subscribe for more! http://bit.ly/JansonYouTube The name Sennenhund is derived from the German Senne (“alpine pasture”) and Hund (“dog”), as they accompanied the alpine herders and dairymen called Senn. Berner (or Bernese in English) refers to the area of the breed’s origin, in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. This mountain dog was originally kept as a general farm dog. Large Sennenhunde in the past were also used as draft animals, pulling carts. The breed was officially established in 1907. In 1937, the American Kennel Club recognized it as a member of the Working Group

What a beauty. I love these gentle giants.

they were bred to pull carts up the Swiss mountains for herders. They do back, but only if they think something is out of place. they would do this toalert the herder that there was something out of place, because this lady is right, they aren't a herding dog or a real guard dog (they are sort of a guard dog in a sense. but they wouldn't hurt a fly)

Berners are great. They're very socially needy and they bond to people, so you have to make sure you play with them/pet them/do things with them every day (which, really, you should be doing with any dog). They're also sort of oblivious, so if you've got little kids around you have to be careful they don't get knocked over by accident.

Holy moly!!! :D

@nickeroo Bernese are not drooling.

Bernese... 15 years? Really?

I want a Burmese Mountain Border Collie cross mix as the combination is beautiful and hopefully the collie adds some longevity to this gorgeous dog.

Did she say they only need to be bathed once or twice a year? They don't get stinky? My dream dog!
-
@deeebird personally, 5 1/2 years with a berner than 20yrs with any other dog! but thats just me, it is so devastating, mine is 16months old...gotta give them that raw diet and never kibble...
-
@deeebird Thats the only reason i wouldn't want one of these guys. They get torn away from you to soon.

Why will people not admit the extent to which cancer occurs within this breed, particularly in the uk. Advertise this breed responsibly
-
@amirjon Only sometimes... not as much as newfoundlands anyways... Thats nasty even thinking about eating a dog. People that eat them are truly troubled.
