The "Marine Electric" Disaster
Mountain | reviews | videos | photos
SS Marine Electric, a 605-foot bulk carrier, sank on 12 February 1983, about 30 miles off the coast of Virginia, in 130 feet of water. Thirty-one of the 34 crewmembers were killed; the three survivors endured 90 minutes drifting in the frigid waters of the Atlantic. The wreck resulted in some of the most important maritime reforms in the second half of the 20th century. The tragedy tightened inspection standards, resulted in mandatory survival suits for winter North Atlantic runs, and helped create the now famous Coast Guard rescue swimmer program.

So a boat can longer sink in a bad storm, it has to be someone's fault so the lawyers can get richer off yet another tragedy.

sad

Salutes to the 3 men that stood their ground and testified. It's always the employees and workers that have to pay the price before safety rules and or standards are put into place. For the rest of the crew Rest In Peace. Thanks for posting this video who ever did.

"Maritime regulation are written in blood", as they have been written after people have died.
-
The U-Boat war (WW2) off the east coast, GoM and down through the Caribbean shouldnt be left out when considering "worst maritime commercial disasters".. but no one teaches these things in school for some reason.
-
should have been cut up for scrap after the war. Unsteady, badly overdesigned for resize. Sending any ship out in a bad storm....dumb. That ship was an accident waiting to happen, and did. So men die because of mens mistakes.

May the Dead RIP knowing their deaths were not in vain.
May the survivors find peace. -
Unfortunately regulations and safety of life at sea are formed, and fine-tuned, with life and blood.

Sorry ...

This is clearly Obamas fault

didn't 33 out of 35 people drown in the loss of the Carl D. Bradley? If so how, could this be the worse U.S maritime loss?
