Die höchste Erhebung bilden die Walliser Dents du Midi (3'257 m ü. M.), ansonsten liegt aber ein Grossteil des Gebirges auf französischem Staatsgebiet. Tief unterhalb der Haut Cime, wie die Dents du Midi auch genannt werden, macht das Rhonetal bei Martigny (467 m ü. M.) einen markanten Richtungswechsel. Die Rhone fliesst daraufhin direkt auf den Genfersee zu. Südlich von Martigny erheben sich die höchsten Gipfel der Alpen. Der Mont Blanc (4'808 m ü. M.) ist mit seiner weissen Gipfelkuppe schon von weit her sichtbar. Weltweit bekannter Talort des Mont-Blanc-Massivs ist Chamonix (1'037 m ü. M.) im französischen Départment Haute-Savoie, das Alpinismuszentrum schlechthin. The Chablais is a pre-Alpine mountain range south of Lake Geneva (French: Lac Léman; German: Genfersee). The Valais Dents du Midi (3,257 m above sea level) is its highest elevation, but the major part of the mountain range lies on French territory. The Rhone Valley makes a striking turn of direction near Martigny (467 m above sea level), way below the Haut Cime, as the Dents du Midi are also called. The Rhone then flows right towards Lake Geneva. The highest summits of the Alps rise south of Martigny. The Mont Blanc (4,808 m above sea level) with its white summit can be seen from far away. Chamonix (1,037 m above sea level) in the French Départment Haute-Savoie, THE center for alpinism, is a world-renowned valley town of the Mont Blanc Massif.
