This is the first time I've read one of these Nibbage videos. So you had a OBB BB stub and no writing sample?
Also, as someone who prides themselves on working, at least a bit on almost every pen I've ever seen reviewed, isn't it possible what might be perfect for someone and the pits for someone else? Then there is the issue of conformation bias that runs rampant throughout the video. Annoyed, irked, while drenched in sanctimony, then you gush over it. You found your way to clean it and work on it, like you do every pen, and you're still not satisfied. Not everybody who buys this kind of pen does so to show off or compensate. They buy it for the experience, and some as an heirloom, to be passed on for many generations. Your prism is but one viewfinder. Yeah, I get it, what do you have to offer if it's not yours, right? I guess I just don't see the joy filled guy who pulled me into their channel. You're too young, smart, and experienced to be jaded. I didn't even mention the worst part. You get pens from people, sellers, and companies, yet you still have the temerity to complain about stuff you almost never have to deal with. I know I am going off on a rant here, but it's mostly because I'm disappointed. You're better than vids like this, with the snark and eye-rolling. Leave that to the knuckle-draggers. Best ~ Jack -
I have absolutely no problem /liking/ the video, as the facts are appreciated and the opinions are both informed and entertaining.
That being said, after having watched many reviews by +SRBEBROWN, I cannot help but think that was this any other marque, this pen would be crucified. Yes, proprietary resin, yes, "statement pen," but if one pauses and thinks, "I could buy a used, albeit terrible, used car, OR I could buy a pen that (it sounds like) odds are will not write flawlessly," well this, to me is not Serious Nibbage - it's a Serious Problem coupled with Serious Hype.
Imagine you bought a full-sized 1911 and had issues such as these. I cannot imagine the opinions not skewing much more negatively.
That being said, thank you once again for an informative and entertaining video. -
Imagine Mont Blank made cars… The would charge a 1000 pounds when you point out they have fitted square wheels. As a company I cannot under stand why they sell anything, other than the SNOB thing.

I spy with my little eye, a Nalgene bottle.....

After hearing your review, I would have to disagree about the 149 being "serious nibbage". Only because of the maintenance and the non-working nib out of the box, especially for the price one would pay for it. I think Montblanc is more prestige than an actual user pen. It's great to have but for me, I would use something else
Thank you for the great review! -
hahahaha a dialogue with Dr. Brown is sort of like having a dialogue with someone with multiple personality disorder -- sometimes the Professor or Mill Cuckfield show up. Love it.

From what I have heard on the forums, I think, most people seem to say that the finer the MB nib the better they are generally, and if you want the best experience then the finer nibs are where this can be found...I have a 1996 149 from a very helpful eBay seller which writes wonderfully (looks like a Naginata Togi nib for some reason)

Prefer your solo reviews. You are definitely more focused from the solo attempts.

Laughing at the thumbnail for this one. I'm guessing that Azizah is, of course, expressing disappointment in Lord Windermere.

The 149 fine nib I owned works perfectly well. But it does raise a question on using other inks. I had experience with some ink that would leave the ink window looked cloudy. But using Montblanc ink would not have this matter and the window goes clear again.
You have to try with the ink and see which works better with it. The writing experience is very very good. It forms the standards for my judgement of nibs in terms of flexibility, softness, responsiveness and ink flow. The feedback is good and you feel you are gliding on the paper, but not too smooth as some nibs does (which are hard and smooth nibs that they are like writing on glass with a round smooth tip).
M1000 from Pelikan (also a fine nib) works very differently as you would expect. Very springy and soft and not suitable for quick returning circular strokes (imagine a right hand user writing circle in a counter-clockwise direction). But for outgoing circular strokes (making circles clockwise for a right hand user) have no problem with it except for speed. M1000 does not mean for speed for the fine nibs. For that purpose M800 would be better. -
i have two 149 one in yellow gold(the standart one) and one in rose gold(the 90 anniversary edition) trim which i both bought from the boutique and am very happy whit them but i did try them out in the store to see which nib i d like and if its comfortable to write whit and if i like the way it wrote ,and when i took them home ink them up and started writing they were prefect i knew they would be perfect ,because i had tried them out before i bought them ,but you really have to go to the MB boutique try the pens out choose the one you like and writes how you like it and have no issues whit and buy it ,then you will have the time of your life writing whit it and then it would have been worth the money ,at least for me it was,

I am a bit new to the hobby. I had a vector as a kid but when the cartridges ran out it got put away and lost. My dad is elderly and in poor health. So my mom gave me his 149 which he can no longer use. It's a medium I believe. One thing I dislike is there is no engraving noting the nib size. A small letter or two would do the trick. I can say mine had no issues so far. It's very wet. Gets great shading writes very smooth. The nib is not what I would call flexible. It's pretty stiff. But I have nothing to compare it to. Dad bought it in Germany in the 1980's. He probably stretched hard to buy it. No trust fund here. I carry it in a cross leather holder every day and I'm really enjoying it. I have MB black and royal blue ink. I will likely stick with MB ink or other washable inks that I'm comfortable with in other pens. I would love to try some of the other more vibrant colors but I'll have to get a lamy or rotring for that. Thanks for the videos. Love your channel.

I purchased my 149 in the early 80's with a medium nib and it worked out of the box. It has only recently become somewhat of an EDC only because I don't travel for work anymore so I have no problem carrying the pen with me and using it more often. I would have to say that I'm not sure I would purchase the pen today at its current retail price but wish I had been smart enough back in my youth to have purchased 5 or 10 as an investment for the future - better than most of my stock pick.

I own a 146 and it has the same issues. Not so good ink flow and occasional skips. Maybe to a lesser degree, but the thing is, that my MB 24 and 14 do give me far better writing experience.
I tried to love the 146 because it is the best build and best designed fountain pen I know of. So I ended up with a love-hate relationship. I think I will send it to one of these nib gurus.
Both (149 and 146) are iconic pens and I still love Montblanc, but these quality issues are inacceptable at that price point.
BTW: Very nice review series! Really well done and with good balance between information and entertainment. -
I bought a pre-owned 149 on eBay. It is serious nibbage! Like you, I could not justify spending $1K for a new one. I did send it to the service center because the piston seemed to be "not smooth" when filling the pen. I can't wait to get it back and do some serious writing. Next pen (pre-own purchase) will be the Pelikan M1000. After I give both a try, I probably will buy a new version of the one I like best. Well, maybe after I buy a Visconti Opera Elements pen. This is getting ridiculous.

How about the professor?

I have the meisterstuck Classique and would love your thoughts on those. Mine makes me feel special every time I use it.

can u speak german???...

You two might be the most charming couple on YT, but lovely nibbage videos and hilarious repartee aside, I have a request; I have to top out the volume on my mac in order to hear your melodious voices, but then owing to the different recording level of your intro music, I drop like a fainting goat when a new vid queues up in my Nibbage playlist!

I got this very same one and having it since 1995 and a ballpoint Meisterstuck (don't see any number) the same size. And a few others. Love pens but don't know what to write!!
