I'm curious, do you think it's likely Hannibal would have lost less men if had he had just followed the Italian coast. I know he would have had to face Scipio, and possibly the garrison of Massilia. But surely that is greater than losing 30,000 men. (Though I'm sure he didn't expect his losses to be so great.)
