Part 3 – New TranzAlpine 2014 – Pass under the Southern Alps on our way to Greymouth.
Mountain | reviews | videos | photos
Filmed from the drivers cab, open air observation carriage and the lineside - Part 3 takes our train under New Zealand's Southern Alps emerging from the Otira Tunnel to follow the Otira River. We then head for the West Coast passing Lake Brunner at Moana, as the vegetation changes to lush temperate rain forest.

Cool video. What is the speed the train runs? http://www.openrailwaymap.org doesn't shows in the mountains.

Trains are boring

Thanks Tim, I really enjoyed that. When I went on the tranz alpine quite a while ago we got off at Inchbonnie to stay at Lake Brunner Lodge - which was excellent! - and then picked up for return to Chch too. We need a statue of the guy that decided on narrow gauge for New Zealand railways so we can throw rotten fruit & veges at him!

I have done this trip. Thanks for the memories . cheers

Brilliant video Tim. The music is so relaxing and I can see the cold air as it was when I lived in NZ. A very unique view of the country I have appreciated very much. Thank you.

This has got to be the most perfect train video ever!!
-
I see what you mean about the weather but it was an enjoyable journey anyway!

this video was very nice but the bit with the windshield wipers going could have maybe been edited out? thanks :)

Great video, buttttttttttt, way too much rain, way too much fog , way too much mist, and way too many rock's. Thank's for sharing.

Really great cab ride/train journey with wet happy end. Lot of thanks for posting. :)
Btw 1: I watched "Driver's eye view - Highspeed TranzAlpine" before 2nd and 3rd part of "New TranzAlpine 2014". I almost did not watched entire trip. I would miss a lot of infos about a journey through great landscapes.
Btw 2: I like Alps in the rain as well as Alps at bright sunshine at both summer and snow. ;)
Btw 3: Would like if somebody post (or have a link to) train journey through white New Zeeland Alps at bright sunshine to test if they fit to "Eine Alpensinfonie" by Richard Strauß... -
(34:30) At Moana it's a little bit like north shore of Lake Geneva. :)

I like the way you have set up all 3 parts, showing all the different angles of the trip. Out of curiosity , how cold does it get up there in the Southern Alps? I guess I'll to pack my Winter coat from home if I ever plan to go to New Zealand, and take the TranzAlpine on this trip. Greetings from Southwest Iowa, USA :o)
