The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (立山黒部アルペンルート) is another unbelievable Japanese engineering achievement. It was constructed to facilitate the construction of the massive Kurobe Dam in the up until then almost completely inaccessible Kurobe Gorge, which lies deep in the Japanese Northern Alps (飛騨山脈 or 北アルプス). Among other engineering feats and sightseeing spots such as the famous snow walls (until around June), it features two Tunnel Trolley Bus lines which operate right under the peak areas of the surrounding mountains at elevations of more than 2,000 meters. The Kurobe Dam itself, which serves as a reservoir for the underground Kurobe No. 4 Hydropower Plant, is an amazing sight especially from mid-June when water is discharged from the overflow valves in the dam.
