Munich and the Foothills of the Alps
Mountain | reviews | videos | photos
In Munich, where locals specialize in good living, we visit boisterous markets and go-for-Baroque palaces, while office workers surf in the Isar River. Heading into the foothills of the Alps, we tour the fairy-tale castles of "Mad" King Ludwig, and climb to the highest point in Germany atop the Zugspitze. Then we cross into Tirol to conquer a desolate ruined castle. © 2002 Rick Steves' Europe

please do not refer to Unser Kini as „mad.” It's not well received.

So I guess it's true. I've heard for many years now that Steves doesn't really like to talk about Garmisch. The rumour has been that he didn't get the financial payback that was expected and hence, won't mention it. Here was a perfect opportunity to include Garmisch in this otherwise somewhat comprehensive overview of Oberbayern (and a portion of Tyrol), and yet, the wonderful town underneath the Zugspitze was ignored. Garmisch, why didn't you pay the shakedown money demanded by Rick Steves? I'm glad you didn't !

dear god it's like a look into the past. Some of this fashion seems 5-10 years old.

oh please, bavaria is a cultural wasteland compared to other regions of germany such as the north-rhine region or Thuringia.

Well, in fact the German kingdom lasted for over 800 years until it was dissoluted with the Holy Roman Empire altogether. And Bavaria's independence as a newly emerged kingdom from Napoleon's grance didn't last even a century. Get your facts together.
