Last year we exhausted our Germany road map and, since my sister and I love continental Europe, it was only natural that this summer our holiday brought us to Lucerne. Why Lucerne? Because it's located right next to the postcard-like Lake Lucerne, with the Alps as a backdrop. Because it's essentially Swiss. Because it offers a fine blend of the old with the ultra modern. Most importantly probably, because it's centrally located in Switzerland, making it the perfect base for our turistic forays into the heart of the country, where alpine scenery, beautiful lakes and rivers, and wonderful little towns and villages await us. My sister is great at researching hotels. This time, as always, I had full confidence in her, and I was right to do so. Hotel Hofgarten was just a short walk from the train station, and it made a great first impression. The hotel is located in a stately 500-year-old heritage building, a former church, which emanates the quiet confidence of the Swiss spirit and catches the eye with its artistic decorations. Shortly after our arrival we enjoyed a wonderful meal in the hotel garden, which is bordered by stone walls and has a pleasingly medieval feel to it. Being both vegans, we were worried that we may not have enough dishes to choose from, a problem we ran into every now and then with local restaurants, but this wasn't the case here. The fresh bread with butter and olives we received as soon as we placed our order were quickly followed by a delicious salad with lentils, couscous, carrots, and other healthy ingredients, and the pasta we had after came in a plentiful portion and was fulfilling, to say the least. We had lots of energy to burn so we packed our cameras and maps and ventured into the old town. After the bustle of our journey to Switzerland it was wonderful to tread old cobbled streets, away from noisy crowds and the honking and the vrum-vrumming of cars. The lovely fresco paintings on the gables of the historical houses kept catching our eyes, and we took lots of pictures of them. By evening we ended up on the famous Chapel Bridge, a covered wooden footbridge with origins that date back to the 14th century. The paintings on the inner walls of the bridge, most of them hundreds of years old, arrested our attention, but then the picturesque views of the chapel, the castle, and the river under the lake kept us spellbound for a good while. 'So far it looks better than in the Switzerland travel video we saw back home,' my sister said. I nodded in approval. The next day we decided to try the modern flavor of Lucerne. The first objective on our list was the city's famous culture and convention center, the KKL, which looked so futuristic with its glass front and oversized roof that we regretted we hadn't booked tickets to the concert that was happening that evening. I blame myself for it -- I was never into classical music. After a quick run on our museum cards through the Glacier Garden, Swiss Army Museum, and the Swiss Museum of Transport, all of them museums with a twist, you can say, it was time for a steamship cruise on the Lucerne Lake, an adventure which made us quickly forget our mild seasickness and helped us plunge into a state of calm and relaxation. We thought about taking the cableway up the nearby Mount Pilatus, but we were too tired. We decided to leave that trip for tomorrow and slunk back to our hotel, smiling to each other like two happy cartoon cats. Like thousands of people, vacation to Switzerland was one of my dreams.
