Nine climbers were killed and more than a dozen injured on Thursday after an avalanche swept away 28 climbers near the summit of Mont Blanc in the French Alps. Reports said the avalanche occurred when a climber disturbed an ice sheet, sending a massive sheet of ice and snow down the north face of Mont Maudit. Two climbers were still unaccounted for by nightfall.
