KiwiRail Trains in New Zealand's Southern Alps (HD)
Mountain | reviews | videos | photos
In this video we capture KiwiRail freight and passenger trains along the stunning Midland Railway Line from Christchurch to Greymouth in New Zealand's Spectacular Southern Alps. We capture passenger trains showing tourists some of New Zealand's greatest scenery such as the Tranz Alpine. We also follow the West Coast coal trains working hard on the steep mountain grades such as the 1 in 50 climb from Jacksons to Otira, the 1 in 33 grade through the Otira tunnel to Arthur's Pass which requires an extra 5 diesel locomotives to assist the 2 train locos and the 1 in 65 Cass Bank. Enjoy the sight and sound the General Electric DX locomotives working hard on the mountain section of the Midland Line under the massive mountain barrier of the Southern Alps, enjoy!

Enjoyed your video- great shots. I was interested to see the old Silver Fern railcars being hauled. I rode on the Silver Fern 40 years ago from Wellington to Auckland- a great journey. I regret that there are not more passenger trains running now. I always read other viewers comments so I think that it was a pity that the mental hospital in which Russell Lewis resides have given him access to a computer. Ignore him and keep up the good work. Best wishes from UK

DXB 5293 what a purebred! Love that 7 stacker @ 3:15 at Goat Creek, 5 DXC bankers added at Otira for the run up the 1 in 33 gradient to Arthur's Pass - the sound of those DX's is a sheer utter symphony of music to my ears oh yeah! 5:10 another beauty, however my fav has got to be @ 5:48 with all 7 Dixies crankin' up big time, smoke bellowing from the 'zorsts of 7 turbocharged General Electric 7FDL 4 stoke V12 diesel engines omg it so doesn't get any better than this!

Never seen 7 Dx locos on a train before, were they testing a few before general release to traffic? To the best of my knowledge they usually use 3 locos to assist the 2 train locos...
