Introduction to Knots - Anchor Hitch and Alpine Butterfly
Mountain | reviews | videos | photos
Two practical knots for tying a ridge line are the anchor hitch and alpine butterfly. When used in combination these knots create a high friction, high tension ridge line that can be easily undone without any frustration. Please forgive a few errors in terminology. The formation and demonstration of the knot were completely accurate.... In a few instances however, when going "under" part of the knots, I was saying underhand. In reality when you bring your working part "over" the standing part, even if you then go "under" and through, you started by going underhand. I'm sure you can see how it can be a bit tricky to use exact term every time. I always want to be as clear as possible. I will improve and get better with each video in this series. Thanks for the well done video. I have moved to using the "evank hitch" as my anchor point. Very quick to tie and undo. For the other end, I usually use either a "trucker hitch" (similar in concept to what you did with the "alpine knot") or "taut line hitch" secured with one or two "slipper half hitch's".

Thanks for a clear well instructed video. This may be considered a small pointless concern but I always insert some sticks between the rope & the tree so that the rope does not strangle the tree. It looked like you were using a spruce for your demonstration. Spruce & balsam both have very soft outer bark that can be easily damaged. In Ontario as in New Brunswick have lots of them but if we abuse them we can have long term effects. Again It may be considered a small thing & maybe I'm a quirky old man. but it can take a generation to replace a tree. Brian 76

10* Good one. Learned something. Anchor hitch is basically like a constrictor knot then a slip knot or bend knot final tightening.

Great job knot videos are harder to shoot than what people think.. I really dig that Alpine butterfly. Definitely trying these.

right on, great description of the two knots. I've found it hard to describe knots to people, for most of us who know knots we just tie them without being able to describe the "how to" verbally. you have the knack my friend.

Normally I would use the truckers hitch but I may try this next time I'm tying a ridgeline. I'm really impressed with the quality of your videos considering you haven't been posting long. It shows that you really did your homework before starting.

That is two great knots! Thanks for sharing :)

very good demo. both knots are very useful and showing the application in a ridge line is awesome. I use an alpine butterfly on my harness for my ascender as well as for my cow's tail.
