IMAX: The Alps (2007) - Eiger North Face
Mountain | reviews | videos | photos
This documentary follows mountain climber John Harlin III as he attempts to scale the north face of the Eiger in the Swiss Alps, one of the most dangerous climbs in the world. Harlin feels compelled to complete the journey because his father died making the same trip. As Harlin plots his trip, he tries to instill in his daughter the same sense of awe towards nature that his father gave him. Once Harlin begins to climb, his family watches his ascent from a distance through a telescope. SO sick of hearing this cunt whine about how terrified and nervous and scared he was. You would think he was forced to climb this face with no fucking tools and no shirt. He has an ENTIRE FUCKING FILM CREW AND MEDICAL AND RESCUE WATCHING HIS EVERY MOVE ready to spring to the rescue at a moments notice and he talks about how alone he feels and how dangerous it was. Yeah, NO.

When they were filming this documentary they found a climber up un the Death zone at 1 in the morning sitting in Green Boots cave next to the climber who died there years earlier. there were several groups who were making a shot for the summit that morning and it was an UNUSUALLY cold day due to a HUGE low pressire system that had settled causing the peak to pretty much be touching the edge of space. No one could help the man because he was pretty much frozen in a sitting position with NO oxygen and sever frostbite. One of the climbers was a double amputee from New Zealand who was making the climb to raise money for other amputees. The man who was sitting in the cave had chosen to climb alone with NO radio NO satellite phone and NO partner. he had been seen making a bid for the summit the afternoon earlier which was cionsidered suicide by most of the experienced climbers because even though it was only a couple hundred meters to the summit, it would normally take several hours to go up and then back down to a camp site near the summit. So 30 people just walked past and KNEW there was nothing they could do. When it is that cold and dark there is NOTHING anyone can do to rescue someone UNLESS they can walk. This man could not, so they kept moving knowing that if they didnt they would likely become unable to go up or down either. EVEN the sherpa guides could do nothing to help and ANY rescue attempt would HAVE to wait till the sun rose. Keep in mind even in the most PERFECT conditions it would be highly unlikely that any one could rescue the man successfully. This has to do with the fact that there is a VERY thin margin of exertion that the body can manage and the altitude is such that a helicopter can NOT fly that high as the air is far too thin to provide enough lift. So they went to the summit and then on their way back two f the Sherpas attempted to asses the mans situation. It took them BOTH more than 20 minutes just to move the man 15 feet into the sun. They gave the man some oxygen and he was able to tell them his name just before he died. The man was so bad he was frozen in the sitting position and his body could NOT be straightened. They reported his name when they made it to the bottom. All was well until the Kiwi climber (the double amputee) made it home and told them his story. Even then all was well until the cunt Sir Edmund Hillary opened his big mouth and claimed that they were all cowards and scum for not attempting to rescue a man who broke ALL the rules of climbing and ended up dead for it. He was NOT on the mountain that day and had no clue what the real situation was. Needless to say, the media made this double amputee ( who actually had to be carried several hundred meters himself on the way down) out to be a hear\tless piece of shit. ALL because Hillary commented on something he knew NOTHING about. The climbers name was David Sharpe and had booked his climb through Asian Trekking and had made the decision to climb alone with NO backup and NO radio and NO satellite phone and NO partner. On top of that he also tried to summit in the late afternoon which is an ABSOLUTE NO NO that ALL climbers know. He was NOT a novice and this trip was his 6th attempt for the summit. Several Sherpas in the light of day couldn't save this man and NO rescue attempt would have been successful either. In spite of all that they expected a first time climber who was a double amputee and who had to be assisted down himself was somehow a monster for not dying trying to rescue a fucking moron. Keep in mind a year earlier another pro climber was in a similar position in MUCH better weather and was mobile but they couldn't get him down and he died up there as well. It is simply because a man with Hillarys' credentials made a fucking asinine statement opened his fat fucking mouth and turned the amputee into a piece of shit in the public eye. What an INCREDIBLY irresponsible thing. NO one said SHIT about the other 29 climbers who walked right past as well. That makes me so fucking angry i want to slap Hillary across the fucking face for being such a cunt in his armchair.
EDIT: that was Everest i was thinking of not the Eiger. -
Also after watching that creepy twisted tunnel opening ceremony earlier this year, Switzerland just seems kind of sinister and evil to me now.
