How to Windproof a Snow Tent

How to Windproof a tent in the snow and protect it from spindrift. Welcome to another winter snow camping trip, we are very excited to cover this topic further. Pitching a tent and making camp above the tree-line is very challenging. We have more snow camping videos in the making so stay tuned. Also you can watch our videos from last year for more info on this topic. BURYING THE FLY OPTION In this video we advise against burying the bottom of the tent fly but in some cases it may be an alternative option. Sideways wind can be very intense in the Alps. Burying the tent bottom may provide better overall wind proofing protection, but it's well known to experienced campers that if you leave your tent fly or tarp touching the ground (or snow) there will be more condensation build up inside your tent; this applies to all terrain types. If the following day is perfectly sunny with cloudless blue skies, condensation may not be a problem as your tent interior will have a chance to dry out. We have tried and tested both systems, be warned there is really no exact science to this. Nature didn't intend humans to be sleeping above the tree-line; that's why we don't have thick fury skins :) WEATHER TIPS In alpine hiking and mountaineering, weather conditions can make or break your holiday. During the 3 months of winter we will monitor the Australian alpine weather forecasts every few days. You can also learn a lot by viewing the snow-cams positioned in ski resorts. On the resort websites they will have pages dedicated to live snow cams showing exactly what those snow fields looks like. Many keen hikers will plan their trips months in advance for a certain weekend and proceed with plan-A even when a bad front is coming. In snow camping you will have a lot more fun up there if you postpone your trip and wait for clear skies. Quite often we have our bags packed ready to go, but then cancel till next week if we believe blizzards are about to hit. In this set-up storm flaps would have helped. Of course since you would lose some ventilation, extra vents would be needed as well. You could take some inspiration from tents like the Helsport Patagonia if you're willing to modify your tent.
A wind break certainly helps - not least it helps the tent not collapse in the highest winds - but you'll get some snow packing due to the turbulence. A vent placed in an optimal position might allow the snow to blow pas it without packing too much. -
Did your snow wall work as you had hoped or did the weather stay nice? I was reading the other comments and I wish you would also do a load out video for winter camping above the tree line. God bless and stay safe.
