Hike of Wonders - Japanese mountain wasabi farm - softypapa
Mountain | reviews | videos | photos
Mere curiosity can lead one to amazing things! Come explore with me beyond the last road! Wasabi horseradish is used in Japan with sushi and sashimi as well as with other meals such as cold soba noodles. Wasabi is derived from the root of the wasabi plant which requires very clean, fresh water to grow well. The mountains of the Japan Southern Alps receive abundant rainfall and this area is perfectly suited for growing wasabi. Farmers in these high mountains have for centuries grown wasabi in terraced fields similar to rice paddies, however wasabi fields are normally situated much higher in the mountains than rice fields. While hiking in the mountains here it is not uncommon to find small wasabi farms situated along the narrow course of fast running streams or at the base of cascading waterfalls. Use the link below to see an active wasabi farm in these same mountains: http://youtu.be/XhvkcO5jLAg ---- Welcome to the Walking in Japan channel. Hi Kurt, I have to ask my friend, why do you wear a tiny bell? I love your videos it makes me feel nostalgic and warm. I hope to travel to places like this someday, they really call to me.
-
"I came up here looking for giant carnivorous leeches." I love how casually he said that. Nice video man.
-
can I ask exactly where this was please? thanks :-)
-
That was spectacular! Are you still in Japan?
-
Keep appreciating it Kurt. You're like the Huell Howser of Japan. Keep doing what you do

Possibly my favorite video you've shared Kurt! What a beautiful scene. It's amazing to think how many generations of hard working farmers have toiled to make such a seamless and intricate farm. The way the this farm is incorporated into, and utilizes nature as opposed to the more modern 'slash-and-burn' style of agriculture is really fascinating. It's almost like this little farm (well...maybe not so 'little') is a mirror into the world of ancient japan. Thanks a bunch for documenting this!

Amazing that there are no animal or bird sounds....
-
thank you for sharing so much of your hike! have you ever run into any of the farmers that run those farms? are they usually irate or friendly? I love your videos. they allow people a chance to explore japan, a country ive always heard was beautiful but am not likely to see any time soon. how amazing!
-
aptltly titled! would have liked to see upstream of that last waterfall ;-0 btw, have you ever mapped your better hikes?

"i came up here to find giant carnivorous leeches" nope.jpg

I like to watch your videos, they are relaxing to watch because you simply have an enjoyable way to talk about the nature and what you are doing.
-
we have them in Okinawa, alot farms use them for dog cages.

I hope you get a chance to revisit that area. It's hard to explain the feeling I have seeing hills, lush green moss and plants with all the rocks and rock formations and water falls, foot bridges and rock walls. It's like I've been there before and I have a sense of nostalgia when viewing the landscapes. And that has to be nothing compared to standing there.

22:00 on, is pure nature-gasm. Makes me want to landscape the local forests to match. lol
-
The boulder at 11:25 looks like a dogs head facing the right of the screen. He's even smiling. That is so awesome. Wasn't expecting that. Plus the irrigation with the bike wheel filter is genius. Same with the little rock walls and foot bridges.

Saved by the Bell!

The kennels might be for putting the dogs in a secure place while the farmers work. Just a thought.
-
This is what I love doing, and like you I shall travel someday and see sights such as these!
-
Awesome video! Have you ever surprised a farmer while on a farm trail?

Thank you for taking the time to do this and share with the world. You've shown me things I never ever would have seen, and treasure the opportunity to do so. I can't wait to see more in the future! Your enthusiasm is infectious!
