Gear: #18 ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 2
Mountain | reviews | videos | photos
The Zephyr is a 2 person tent that is light enough for backpacking. While not the lightest in the world, it will provide adequate protection for 1 person plus the gear. 2 is stretching it unless they really like each other. http://www.alpsmountaineering.com/

MSR Ground Hogs are great. I bought an eight pack for $15.99 on ebay.

I imagine, you can just use the rain fly and poles and foot print only, to save weight?
-
How well do you still like it and how has it held up over the past few years? I'm about to pull the trigger and purchase one.

Hey, Scott quick question if you don't mind giving me some advice.
I'm an amateur, really just getting into tenting. I just recently bought (online) this exact tent. It comes with everything EXCEPT for a footprint to go under.
Problem is, I'm a little tight on money after picking up this tent and would really love to hear some good news that I won't have to dish out another $80 for a footprint.
In your opinion, do you think I can get away with not using a footprint (at least for a little while) as long as I make sure that the ground is smooth and free of sharp or abrasive objects? -
Your total weight says 5.53 oz. Did you mean lbs? :P

Good video

Good review. Compared to other tents in this 1 or 2 person category and price range, how would you rate it's ease in setting up? I am bad at setting up things. Thanks.

Thanks for the review. But as with other tent reviewers, I don't know why it's so hard to set the camera down at some distance, and get in so we can get a feel for the size of it. JESUS!

Thank you for the great review, I must say this seems as very poorly designed tent. IMHO.

thanks a lot for this video. I also seem to have one or two less guy rope for the bottom loops. if possible could you let me know how many guy ropes in total did u receive in package.

I had this same tent. Used it in all seasons. Mine started to leak after the 2nd year.

Have you tried seam sealing them? Not sure if the silicone and mineral spirits would work on that fabric but I know there are a few commercial products. Check out my Tarptent seam sealing vid to see how I did my Double Rainbow.

Great video! I just purchased this tent and am thinking about getting the ground cover as well. You mentioned in the video that you can setup the fly just on the ground cover and said you'd get to that later in the video but I never saw it. It seems to me that the fly on the ground cover won't work because the main tent is needed to attach the cross support pole. Is there a way to hold that pole in place with just the rainfly? Or do you just go without it and tighten with guy wires? Thanks!

Please don't mind me if I also use the Benny Hill theme in my next tent setup montage, haha...

That's not really possible. First, the Zephyr is very low at the foot. You can't fit your head and shoulders down there. Second, the foot is narrower than the head. Very comfortable tent for one person. Excellent ventilation at the head with those big doors. Very easy entry. The zip-down door is handy but if there's much wind you won't be able to unzip the door at the top in the rain, as the review says.

I have the chaos 2 and you can set it up inside the fly and take it down as well, which is great when it rains. I will do a video on it when I get a chance. You can see the tent on my hiking videos.
