I soaked the pen in water overnight (which I shouldn't have done) and the pli-glass sac came off. I got in touch with the dealer asking if it was okay to attach with shellac and he said: Shellac will NOT fix the pli-glass sac and the metal guard. Shellac is for latex rubber, you need clear nail varnish for your Duofold. Any thoughts? Response From David Nishimura of VintagePens.com: Shellac has long been the standard for attaching sacs, and for good reason. It dries hard but tough, does not break down with age or exposure to moisture, and has a proven track record of playing nice with pretty much every pen material ever used. The one drawback of shellac is that it doesn't harden immediately, which I suspect is the main reason some people have turned to faster-drying stuff like rubber cement and nail polish. I don't use either, for a few reasons: I don't like to breathe the solvents in them (the solvent for shellac is ordinary alcohol); I'm not sure how well they will hold up in the long term; and there have been cases of bad reactions between them and some plastic sections. Getting back to the question, though, I can affirm that shellac will work just fine for attaching a Pli-Glass — that is, transparent PVC — sac. If you want to play it extra safe, you might first want to degrease the inside of the sac mouth with a cotton swab moistened with a bit of alcohol. The main thing, however, is to leave plenty of time for the shellac to harden before you reassemble your pen and put it to use. I've used shellac to attach Pli-Glass sacs for years, and the only problems I've ever had was when I used a bit too little or when I got impatient and didn't let the shellac set good and hard. On a Parker with a metal sac guard, the sac guard should be a good tight press fit onto the connector. No adhesive or sealant should be necessary to hold it in place. As for why the sac came off in the first place, that's a bit of a puzzle. If it was a new sac and the dealer had attached it with nail polish, that might be an argument against nail polish! On the other hand, if it was the original sac, I suspect what happened was the old PVC absorbed enough water from the soaking to swell up to such a degree as to detach itself, and would have done so regardless of what was used to attach it. As I first wrote years ago in Pen Repair Don'ts, "Pens are designed to hold liquid, not to be immersed in it".
