Fountain Pen Shootout #21: Sailor 1911 Large vs. Montblanc 146

In this Shootout, I compare the Sailor 1911 Large to the Montblanc 146. These two pens share quite a few features...

I would like to see the Sailor with a similar nib a 1911 L with a broad vs the MB 146 b.. but they are both nice....

Just seeing this for the first time. I'm more of a platinum/rhodium guy but can't help but notice how different the gold plating color is. The MB of course much more of a natural looking honey color of the gold plating consistent with solid gold 18k alloys. Never thought about it before but obviously Sailor has matched the plating to the 21k alloy they use for the nibs. Hence why it's so much more yellow in color. Interesting.

"'Precious resin" Isn't that a fancy word for plastic ?
-
How about the weight between the two pens?

Great review-thank you so much for that; I was trying to decide between the two and this has helped immensely. Love your videos please keep them coming.

I doubt it too. Just wondering though. I'm sure it can post but most likely cannot screw in. Let me know, though, please (:

Are the caps interchangeable? At posting and screwing in. I'm wondering because I'd really enjoy a zoom nib but I want that white star! haha

I love how Sailor beats MB at their own game. I think the intent was to figuratively slap them around for their glamor they convey to the public.

I don't wanna sound rude or anything, but let's face it, Sailor 1911 is poor guy's Montblanc 146. I'm no MB fan boy, in fact I genuinely believe MB nibs, at least post-2000 have been getting worse, prima facie ceteris paribus I'd pick the sailor pens over MB ones any day. It's an interesting phenomenon, rather unnerving realising the level of our exposure to marketing ploys and even worse is our own state of oblivion regarding it.

I would like to note that I found the Montblanc pen for $690 on the internet; the first one I saw at least. It's a beautiful pen, writes beautifully from what I've seen, but I don't have that money. xD You're review was amazing.

wow thought i had double vision for a second when you held them up . excellent shoot out , if i could of a picked a shootout i might of picked these lol. ive nearly bought a sailor a few times now but i always come back to the fact its only a cartridge /converter pen , i know the MB is a lot more expensive but pelikan do a piston filler for a great price , still the sailors a really nice pen and the MB of course . great vids keep em coming .

Hi Stephen, what about a Fountain Pen Shootout #21 reloaded... It would be really cool to see how you disassemble the MB 146... What do you think?

I've been thinking about getting a Sailor for a bit so this was very helpful in seeing it in action. Thanks for the time in doing this. I'll be viewing a lot more of your other shootouts. They're very good for familiarizing myself with the different pens that have similar features.

Hello , I have been watching all of your posts and can not hide my admiration to your efforts . I have both pens but surprisingly the sailor which I have is F nib and it looks EEF nib in european measure . It is an excellent pen but its nib size is the only disadvantage "I did not know about the japanese measurement otherwise I should have selected wider nib . Both of them is fantastic and the speciality of MB that no other pen has makes it the perfect one . Thank you

the Sailor pen. Is it Asian or European? im trying to figure out what nib i should get on the mid size 1911
