Disassembly of a Montblanc 149 and Pelikan M1000

DISCLAIMER: feel free to try this at home, but please BE CAREFUL! I will not accept responsibility for broken pens. Also, taking any pen apart may void your warranty, so make sure you really want to do this, before doing so! In this video, I show you how to remove the piston from a Montblanc Meisterstück 149 and a Pelikan M1000. You don't have to do this, but if you want to clean the pens really well, or add some clear silicone grease to the piston for lubrication, this can be useful. I'm trying to replace my ink and it's impossible to disassemble my pen.. I'll have to take it in to the store for help..

Do you know if this wrench will work on the m800?
-
Quick question here mate :) what kind of grease do you put? Ceramic Grease? Teflon Grease? Any grease? Will the grease affect the ink in any way? many thanks!

I found a thin 7 mm wrench in my bicycle tool box that worked perfectly. Thanks for the video.

I liked your pen thoughts and the disassembly of the 149.... but I never found out how to replace the nib!!!
I have a 149 from around 1971 bought at the Pen Shop in Upper Regent street, London.
I dropped the pen and it landed on the nib which has been pushed up and not sitting properly in the nib holder. I can unscrew the nib assembly but cannot extract the nib to adjust and polish etc.
I need help in HOW TO extract the nib. This would be appreciated as I am not in the UK and hate to think what a 5 min job will cost!!! Can you help or point me in the right direction.

A fascinating instruction video, and I am saying that even though I had no reason for watching as I have neither of these pens.

A tool is not necessary to remove the nib unit. Many years ago (1979) I saw a pen expert in Mexico City to change nibs between two 149's. He just took the section with his left hand and the nib with his right hand, using pieces of rubber to get a better grip, and did the twisting move.

you will hate me when i tell you that the MB boutique hamburg is one street away from my work and they service my pens for free :-D
Also, whenever i am there, i get a cookie. BOOM! -
hmm what were the chances that TWSBI, Pilot (823 Vac filler has the same opening for the vacuum mechanism as Vac700) and Pelikan have the same source for the Piston mechanism... there should be a reason why the wrench fits right?

is it good for the mont blanc thomas mann fountain pen please stephen

Well done - thanks.

Hi, I have a broken piston and I was wondering if you know if it's possible to get a new piston part? The bit you took out?
-
Great video. I have just received my pre-own MB 149. There is a slight looseness to the piston and I was wondering whether some silicone grease would fix this issue. Could you tell me what is the distance between the 2 pins for the MB pin spanner (maybe a weekend project to crease one)? Where did you get it from?

Nice video. Just one question on a sister-pen, Montblanc Starwalker. I have a Montblanc Starwalker fountain pen. Unfortunately, I kept the pen with some ink inside the barrel for a long while. Shame on me. Now, I want to do a detail cleaning out of the nib. I have soaked overnight in distilled water. I was hoping to take off the nib and clean the assembly but it seems I am not able to. Is this nib a screw-on nib or one I can push out with gentle force? :)

Thank you.

Hi, Stephan. Now you have already purchased your tortoise brown M800, can you say if the TWSBI wrench can do the job? Besides, I've just bought my M800 italic nib, and I'd like to know how long should I expect to be necessary to do some maintenance in the piston system. Thank you.

Great video!

Thanks for your help, I'll let you know what happens once my supplies (micro abrasive pads and brass sheets) come and I fiddle a bit.
-
They look okay, but I have little experience. I ordered some smoothing material and some brass sheets to clean/open the slit. I got a 10x and a 20x loupe so I could get a good look. I may try smoothing and bending the nib away from the feed some to try for better flow. It's kind of scary on an expensive nib, lol. I plan to get that Italic Broad nib for the 805, so I might see if they'll work on the med nib at the same time. Not sure if I want to make the Italic B nib into a cursive italic..
