Dead body on Everest - South Col
Mountain | reviews | videos | photos
Dead body on Mount Everest. The body's skin has turned to leather under the harsh sun and dry dessicated conditions. This clip is shown with due respects to the unidentified mountaineer. On a personal level, we want something done about this terrible personal and ongoing human tragedy where dead mountaineers are not able to be brought down from the peak, due to the many limitations. However, we recognize the same and so submit to the situation with due humility. A body is so heavy that a single porter cannot possibly lift and bring it down, so most dead bodies are consigned to a deep crevasse and given what is called a 'glacial burial'. As many viewers also rightly point out, the people who undertake such climbs are aware of the risks involved... Since a human body is too heavy to carry back to Base Camp, bodies are either abandoned in the open or given a glacial burial by being released into a crevasse, in a sleeping bag or sack. Located in the Himalaya, Mount Everest is the world's highest mountain above sea level at 8,848 metres (29,028 ft). At the higher regions of Mount Everest, climbers seeking the summit typically spend substantial time within the "death zone" (altitudes higher than 8,000 m/26,246 ft), and face significant challenges to survival. Temperatures can dip to very low levels, resulting in frostbite of any body part exposed to the air. Since temperatures are so low, snow is well-frozen in certain areas and death or injury by slipping and falling can occur. So deep sea scuba divers purposefully dive alone because they know that if there is a problem any attempt to rescue another diver puts them in grave danger. Everest is the same way. I do not fault anyone who does not attempt a rescue. You go up there, then you go up knowing you have a 1 in 4 shot of being a casualty and you shouldn't expect someone to flush $65,000 down the toilet to rescue your ass. If you take that risk then you should be prepared to accept the consequences.

A lot of them are used as markers as well for camp sites

Yasuko Namba's husband actually funded a mission to retrieve her body, & she was brought down in 1997, a year after the 1996 disaster. This is, indeed, real. Climbers walk past bodies everywhere on Everest. There are close to 300 dead bodies now up there that can't be brought down, especially from up past Camp 4. There is a wonderful documentary on YouTube called, "Storm Over Everest" about the 1996 Everest Disaster with great interviews with Charlotte Fox, Sandy Hill, Beck Weathers, & others.

Always wonder what they were thinking when they died. Trying to achieve their dream of the summit, yet realising they are not going to make it.
-
That looks like Camp 4, which is at 26,000 ft (8000m). It's littered with discarded oxygen bottles, tents, trash and corpses. The air is so thin there, that takes all of your effort just to walk and breath. No one has the strength to carry you down from there if you get into trouble.

I heard that the people who go up there like having the dead bodies in their pictures of their trip , because it adds to the shock factor when they cash in their bragging rights to impress everyone with the details of the adventure. With the guided trips up there these days senior citizens and cub scouts have made it to the summit , lets face it they could get those bodies and trash down from there if they really wanted to.

that is so Fucking fake
-
The wild... Where even the strongest can perish, and shelter is vouchsafed to none.

Nobody took the boots. Loose boots after several years of tear-and-wear are taken off by the work of ice on them (remember his feet are shrink-smaller now, completely dehydrated and momified). Or he was caught in an avalanche and had no time to put them on and run. It can be also delirium caused by altitude sickness, which usually ends with agonizing climber taking off his gloves, hat and boots...

Pinching the lads boots........... now that's a bit shit like!!!

recent death by looks fo gear

He has probably been there for some time. Looks like he lost a shoe which means he probably took a slip and fell. Climbers don't lace their shoes tight because it cuts the circulation of blood and when they take a fall, shoes often fall off. No chopper rescue in the Death Zone. Choppers cannot fly above 20k or so.
