How does Montblanc crafts the perfect nib for its fountain pens? Come behind the scenes and watch how the nib is cutted, grinded and welded. A nib is not just a nib. It is a unique instrument – with its own voice and own way of writing. Made to create a truly special relationship – between the writing instrument and the person who uses it. Discover more on http://www.montblanc.com It all begins in our nib manufacture in Hamburg, Germany with a 18 K gold band. Over 30 handsteps are involved in the manufacture of the gold nib. Once the gold blank has been cut away the nib is stamped with its individual nib stamp and then shaped into its final form. If you have tried to write with the nib in this state, the soft nib tip would be quickly written away. As such, an iridium writing ball is welded onto the nib tip. Iridium is one of the hardest and densest materials available. After this a wafer-thin disc made of diamond dust and graphite cuts the gold nib along the centre to the heart hole. Then more material is removed from the sides of the nib point, in order to ensure the two nib wings are perfectly alike. The gold nib is ready for the main procedure – the hand grinding for which Montblanc’s mastercraftsmen require absolute silence, patience and expertise. Only after the craftsman has shaped the nib and filled the writing instrument with ink he can start with the precise process of listening to the creation progress and check for any imperfections in the score. Once this test is completed, the individual parts of the writing instrument are put together and a new writing instrument is born.
