Cows Walking to the Valleys for the Winter, French Alps, France
Mountain | reviews | videos | photos
On a motorbike ride last week, we headed up to the Massif des Bauges' mountain roads and were surprised to see the first snows on the mountains already. We were not surprised however to see the cowherds (apparently, there's a difference between cowherds and shepherds who herd sheep -- I'm from Los Angeles so you'll have to excuse my non-mountain vocabulary) herding the cows down from the mountain pastures to the barns and valley pastures for the winter. We happened to run across it so I took video. Later we found ourselves trapped behind the cows on one of the main mountain roads. The only thing we could do is to wait for a fork in the road and take the other direction whether you want to or not. The cowherds feel no need to bring the cows over into one lane to let cars pass. The same thing happens in the Spring when they are taking the cows back up to the mountain pastures. It's just part of French Alps living.... www.frenchalpsandprovencetours.com Affordable Tours of the Two Most Beautiful & Fascinating Regions of France www.france-and-beyond-photoblog.com Award-Winning Photos of France, Europe and Beyond www.clcaugheynonprofitservices.com Affordable Nonprofit Grant Writing and Coaching by an Expert with 25 + Years of Experience

Cool vid - should've just stopped for a break when you came up on the cows, there's normally no way around them. The comment about getting them over into one lane to let traffic pass . . . well, I guess you were lucky that they just kept moving lol. At least you got a good view of the scenery while you were travelling slowly ;-)
