Climbing Mt Tasman-Rarakiroa (New Zealand) via the North Shoulder route
Mountain | reviews | videos | photos
Great classic climb of New Zealand accessible from the Pioneer Hut side (New Zealand Western Alps). Climbers: Lans Hansen, Paul Bird, John Yu and Vincent Zintzen. October 2014. We did a ricky of the route the day before the climb and started that night at 1.00am. We found the route in good conditions, with strong winds only at the tops. The 'Notch' section needed to be pitched but the rest of the climb could be soloed. Ice serac impressive but acceptable if you move fast. A recommended classic climb.

Awesome climb and great work with the camera, cudve been a lot better without the music. Raw sound is best bro, (and to anyone out there making and editing vids..) music really destroys so many mountaineering and big wave surfing videos. It is far too broad and personal in taste..it manipulates and steers the emotion in a certain direction or state of mind. A lot of us have no choice but to hit the mute and miss a chance of a pitch explained.
So many people in the comments ask "what song is that"...focused on the music rather than the event.
Nothing compares to the sound of a mountain (even the silence is amazing) or a huge wave crashing. The sound of the wind flicking across the mic is much more lasting in depth than an emotional melody. A detailed narrate overlay here and there is even more interesting.
The old traditions of film school (hollywood) are dying...when it comes to mountains, you dont need to toil for what music is needed...RAW is best.
Thank u for sharing this vid, very beautiful footage and very impressive climbing! God bless you -
Guys, amazing video and basically the only available on mt Tasman.
I'm planing to attempt a solo on Tasman this Oct/Nov on the exact route you did. Do you have any advice as to how feasible it is to solo it? Basically the decent is my biggest unknown and whether to rappel at some point... Should I bivy on Marcel?
I have moderate experience in steep alpine climbing and have soloed mt. Aspiring.
Best, thanks -
