Adriatic Sea Travel Video - The Adriatic Sea (from Latin , Hadriaticum Mare) is a body of water located south of Europe separating the Italian Peninsula (west) of the Balkan Peninsula (east), and the system of the Apennine Mountains from the Dinaric Alps and adjacent ranges. It is part of the Mediterranean Sea . It is a gulf narrow elongated measuring maximum 200 km wide from east to west , and 800 km from north to south . At its southern end it borders the Ionian Sea , which separates the Strait of Otranto . Its surface is approximately 160,000 Total km ² . The western coast is Italian , while the eastern part is mostly Croatian , although some sections are in Slovenia , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Montenegro and Albania . Some major rivers flowing into the Adriatic are the Reno , Po , Adige , Brenta , Piave and Neretva . The Adriatic coast is 60% Italian and concentrates a large number of resorts such as Venice (which is called "Pearl of the Adriatic" 1 ) in the north.
