More information about the video content bellow: 1. Australia is as wide as the distance between London to Moscow. This makes it the 6th largest country in the world, occupying an entire continent. And yet, less than 23 million people live here, out of which more than 85% live within 50km off the coast. 2. The Australian Alps is the highest mountain range in Australia. Although its highest peak is at 2228 metres, usually the mountain range receives more snowfall than Switzerland. 3. After giving the world the Hills Hoist, dual flush toilets and cask wine, Australia can also take credit for the term "selfie". It seems almost certain the selfie originated in Australia with a young drunk first using the word to describe a self-portrait photograph in 2002, in an ABC forum post. 4. Canberra was created in 1908 as a compromise when Sydney and Melbourne both wanted to be the capital city. In the early 1900, Canberra was basically sheep grazing land; a blank sheet of paper on which an American, Walter Burley Griffin, designed a city. 5. In 1975, Australia had a government shutdown, which ended with the Queen firing everyone and the government starting again. The fact that Australia could pull it off is a quirk of its history as a former British colony that, never fully broke away. It's now an independent country but still a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, which means it recognizes the British monarchy as technically in charge. That monarch still has formal power over Australia's government but almost never actually uses it. The 1975 crisis was the exception. 6. In New South Wales, there is a coal fire beneath the ground which has been burning for 5,500 years. The scientific explanation for Burning Mountain is a slowly combusting coal seam. At the moment, the exact location of the fire is a mystery, though we know it’s about 30m below the ground and heading south. 7. The world's highest proportion of migrant settlers in a developed nation with over 25% of Australians born in another country. Today's Australia is very multicultural with Indigenous peoples and migrants from some 200 countries. Australia's first small step to a fully multicultural Australia was the result of immigrants from Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean after 1945.
