I think Leather as an option is preferable. I prefer my vehicles not in Leather. Leather is nice when you first own a vehicle, but degrade in quality over time unless you spend a lot maintaining it.

I think a cheaper option for just the first row to have real leather would be a great idea in larger family SUV if they could match the color/textures. Artificial leather would hold up a lot better and be easier to clean with the kids in the rear seats.
