More than 200 people were involved in the exercise which was part of a series of tests being carried out on the tunnel before it can be reopened. The tunnel has been closed since a massive fire in 1999 which killed 39 people. The French and Italian authorities said the tests had been a success and they were hopeful the tunnel would be reopened within two weeks. The date of reopening of the tunnel of the Mount-White will be officially fixed on February 8 by an inter-governmental commission which will meet in Rome.
